Case Study Introduction

"Going Places is one of the UK's biggest and best-known high street travel agents. It is a travel agency ‘multiple’, which means that Going Places has many branches around the country – over 400 in 2007, although this number was as high as 720 in 2002. Like many famous names in the travel and tourism industry, Going Places actually belongs to a larger organisation. It was formerly part of the MyTravel Group, which in turn merged into the Thomas Cook Group of travel companies in 2007. This process of one large organisation owning or controlling different parts of the travel industry is known as ‘integration’ – the Thomas Cook Group is a vertically-integrated organisation since it owns a wide range of companies at different levels of the chain of distribution in travel and tourism, including travel agencies, tour operators and airlines. As Figure 1.1 indicates, Going Places is now one of Thomas Cook Group’s UK and Ireland brands".
