Case Study Introduction

 
"Thomson Holidays is a mass-market tour operator. It is part of TUI Travel plc, which was formed in 2007 by the merger of TUI UK Ltd, which included Thomson, and another large-scale UK-based tour operator, First Choice Holidays.

 

Thomson packages a wide variety of holiday products to short and long-haul destinations and sells high volumes on the mainstream holidays market. So, it is referred to as a ‘mass-market’ tour operator, while Kuoni (see Case Study 3), for example, is primarily a long-haul tour operator and Lynchpin (see Case Study 4) is a small-scale, specialist tour operator".

Author Information
 
Stephen Rickerby is a Chief Examiner and Principal Moderator in Travel and Tourism. With over 25 years teaching experience, he has taught the subject since the early 1990s and was, until recently, Head of Department in a Sixth Form College. Stephen is the author of several Travel and Tourism text books and resources, and has experience of the industry, working in a specialist tour operating company. Currently a consultant, assessor and writer in tourism education, Stephen regularly leads in-service training courses for teachers and lecturers of Travel and Tourism.
