Unit Overview

"Travel and tourism is developing rapidly throughout the world. It is seen as an excellent way of creating jobs, generating revenue and helping economic development in destinations from Bradford to Bali, Cardiff to Cancun and Keswick to Kenya. Tourism development has huge potential to help countries in the less economically developed world (LEDW), but it must be managed in a responsible way that is respectful of local people, their cultures and the environment if it is to be truly sustainable in the long term.

This unit gives you the opportunity to learn more about why and how responsible tourism development takes place at local, national and international levels. You will learn about the impacts of tourism development and examine the roles of the ‘agents’ involved in developing tourism, i.e. all the individuals and organisations that have an interest in tourism development. You will also investigate a range of strategies used to manage responsible tourism in destinations, such as traffic management and developing community projects. Finally, you will learn how to plan a holiday that incorporates the principles of responsible tourism development".
